We all know that life is about ups & down. As human beings, we can not get away from hardship, difficulties, failures, and other things that make us feel like we are at the lowest point. It can be triggered by our inner self and outer environment. The thing is, we cannot avoid bad things to happen. We can escape from the realities that often do not align with our expectations.

For me, the key to overcoming any situation in life is to build resilience. Referring to verywell.com, Resilience is what gives people the psychological strength to cope with stress and hardship.1 It is the mental reservoir of strength that people are able to call on in times of need to carry them through without falling apart. Psychologists believe that resilient individuals are better able to handle adversity and rebuild their lives after a struggle.

Resilient people see their problems with a different mindset, to bounce back stronger in any situation they face. It doesn’t mean that resilient people don’t feel all of those bad things in their life, it’s more about how they cope up. They acquire healthy cope-up mechanism skills. Instead of drowning in all those negative feelings, they love to overcome the situation in a different way. They see failures as learnings.

Resilience itself does not reduce the stress or remove life’s difficulties. Through resilience, we can understand that life is painful and unexpected moments might happen sometimes, but we can always have a mental model that allows us to work through the hardship and recover. There’s no such thing as the end of the world for resilient people.

On acquiring resilience, we need to reframe our thoughts. Learn to see the uncomfortable moment through a different lens. I personally learn to acquire resilience back when I was failed to get into my dream university. The 18 years old of me felt like being rejected after 3 times attempted was the end of the world. But instead of drowning in the disappointment and all negative feelings I had, I chose to recover and move on. It wasn’t easy, it took me a year to fully move on and since then I never really saw any other failure in life anymore. I put the faith in myself that everything that does not align with my expectation is great learning for my development. Although I still feel all the negative feelings whenever I face a bad moment, I never let myself get drowning in it. I always remind myself to bounce back higher.
